If you suffer from a burning sensation while urinating, or you need to urinate frequently, you may have a urinary tract infection (UTI). UTI’s can be painful, but, when treated properly, are rarely a serious health threat.
UTI’s are caused by bacteria entering the urinary tract. At one time or another in their lives, 1 out of 4 women develop a urinary tract infection. Women tend to get UTI’s more often than men, because in women sexual intercourse can result in bacteria being pushed into the urethra, the urinary canal; and women have a shorter urethra than men. Wiping from back to front after bowel movements – i.e., towards the urethra – can also push bacteria towards the urinary tract.
